Now, before you get all excited, realize that I'm one of those people who just starts playing with the toy without ever reading the manual...meaning, just 'cause you think I do something great with my photos doesn't mean I can for sure explain to you how I do it. Neither do I believe I'm anything more than a decent hobby photographer (see the "About Me" on the left sidebar)...I'm only doing this because people have asked.
Having said that, I've had several questions recently about photography, and I'm more than happy to attempt to answer questions as best I can. So, if you've got a question based on my photography, here's your chance to ask...the more specific your question, the more likely I'll have a usable answer.
And, before you do ask, Read This Post to find out if your Q already has an A!
Thanks!
Nate

First time commenter. But I have been so moved by your story of your life and your beautiful family.
I do have a question for your photography q&a. I'm new to photography as well and I love it. I do have a canon 40d and still learning to use that monster. But I was wondering if you might have some good direction for selecting the right apeture depending on what you are shooting and what you are wanting to get as a result. Example would be taking a picture of a babies foot, haveing the foot totally in focus but the rest of the baby be blurred out. Or taking a picture of a face and having the eyes really clear and then the fade to blue start out from that. I know what I want to capture and how I want it to look, I'm just having a difficult time getting my Aps set right. Any advice?! I'd love to hear.
Thanks!

Just curious as to what lens(es) you use for your photos. I'm looking to buy a new lens and love to hear what people like/don't like about the ones they use. Thanks!
Perfect timing, I was going to email you a question today. How do you get the "CF Husband" and "Nathan Lawrenson Photography" watermarks on your photos? Thanks!
Since you already answered my questions on the prior post, and that someone has already asked a couple of the same questions, I wont ask one....
Wait, I might have one....
Besides your girls, what are the favorite things you like to grab photo's of? AND, Are you going to upgrade your camera?
Thanks so much! I have a canon XSi...
How did you get your lighting for the photo's you recently posted?
Read your older post, and saw that one thing you do in editing is get rid of haze. I whole-heartedly agree with that as a necessary part of editing. Just wanted to suggest that you can pick up a UV filter for under $10 that can screw onto the end of your lens that helps out with that. Leave it on all the time to also protect your lens from scratches. Also a polarizing filter would be nice for bringing more saturation of color into your images and is also relatively cheap (probably under $20 for a lower end one at B&H photo).
I have and use a UV filter all the time. I also have a circular polarizing filter, as well as a neutral density filter, which can be very nice too, but a little more money. My just for fun filters are a dark red (good for contrasty black and whites) and an infrared (for images you can't see with the naked eye).
I have a photo blog too - http://onephotojourney.blogspot.com/ but I don't post there TOO often.
Really like your photos!
Jeremy
So i can't see where to contact you via email or anything, so I'm writing cuz Im thinking of shaving my hair here in Vegas at an event called St Baldricks! If I do, it will be in honor of Trish! Man I'm scared, but my hubby is more scared! Shall I do it?!?!?!
I'm a first time commenter on this blog. I'm also an ametuer (sort of semi-pro as I have done and aspire to do more weddings, senior and other portraits) and I do have a question. You mentioned in your last Q&A that you add a soft glow filter/special effect to give it that very soft, warm look. Is this something that you do in the HP program? Or is it a photoshop thing? I looked around for something similar in PhotoImpact (my personal favorite) and also in photoshop, but I can't find anything like it. I LOVE the look it gives to your photos, though and I'd love to do it on some of mine, especially some of the ones I sell.
Thanks,
Rachel
Ok, I'm commenting again. I think I found something similar in one of my PhotoImpact programs. I'd still love to hear more information on how you do it. In the mean time, if you would like to tell me what you think, I'd appreciate it. http://12yearold20something.blogspot.com/
Thanks again,
Rachel
I second all of the photos about editing and I'm wondering about the black background. I'm assuming it is with an editing program, I'm just wondering which one! I have a Rebel with real film and I'm jealous of how easy it seems to be to edit on the digital.
Oh, oops. I came here all excited from the link on your cfhusband blog. I thought by 'photography q&a', you meant you were going to answer questions with pictures - you know, like "what's Gwyneth's funniest face?" or "how do you and Tricia like to relax at home together?" and then post pictures instead of answers. Now I feel silly.
I probably don't have to add that I am not much of a photographer. Good of you to do this, though.
Hey Nate,
I have a question about the photos of Meka and Ralphie you recently took. I am assuming that was all ambient light? Could you tell me all the tricks you used to take those. ISO setting, flash/no flash?, etc. They are awesome!!! (as is all your photos)
Perhaps it was asked before, but I didn't see it --- I was wondering what program you use to edit your pictures? I've tried several programs and just haven't found one I really like.
Love your cfhusband blog! I pray for your family all the time!
1-What is your favorite lens?
2-What mode do you shoot in most of the time?
3-How do you get the black background? Editing or a backdrop?
4-How do you change the color saturation on your camera...or do you do that when you edit? (I have the same camera as you do).
Thanks!
What kind of camera do you use? How do you feel about the Nikon Vs. Canon debate? Do you have a preference? I'm looking into buying a DSLR and can not decide between the two!
I have been a faithful follower of your CF husband blog and have been praying for you all since last January. Our God is sooo huge! Thanks for enabling anonymous comments as I am still stuck in the dark ages without a blog account. :)
I like the muted finish on some of your photos (ex: the six kirschners in your beach photos from last summer and many of the hospital photos last spring). How do you do that/what's the finish called?
Also, how'd you do the lighting on the last post (each of you with Gwyneth and the dark background)?
Thanks
Michelle
How'd you finish pics 2-5 that you posted today on your CF Husband blog?
